KMVFD was incorporated on January 18, 2005 as an Alaska 501(c)(3) nonprofit to protect McCarthy and Kennicott — an unincorporated community with no municipal government, no hydrants, and no road access except the 60-mile McCarthy Road. We're still the only fire and emergency response organization for the area today, and we help protect the Kennicott National Historic Landmark and the historic structures around it.

Our Mission

Building Our Firehall

Our History

Our volunteers train for structural and wildland fire response, work alongside our local EMS on emergency medical calls, aid with search and rescue, and work with state and federal partners on Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) fire operations. We work to educate our community members and our visitors on safe burning practices so we can all continue to enjoy this incredible place.

Building Our Firehall

In 2023, thanks to Senator Murkowski, KMVFD secured a HUD Community Project Funding grant of about $200,000 for a new fire hall. This roughly $285,000 project will finally give our volunteers and apparatus a proper home base in McCarthy. The project is underway, and we'll share more as it takes shape.
